All About Myanmar

Anyhow, as seen in some photos from my previous post, the majority of Burmese wear sarongs or 'Longyi' (in Burmese) for everyday life πŸ˜„ Longyi worn by men is called 'paso' while Longyi worn by women is called 'htamein' ~ the difference culture between other Southeast Asian countries is that they only wear sarongs at certain moments, while in Myanmar sarongs are wear on every occasion. When they go to work or even when they gathering with friends πŸ˜†

However, nowadays many young people are wearing jeans in their daily lives and wearing sarongs for formal occasions~ And another good story is in their daily lives, most women use a kind of organic powder so called 'Thanakha' which has function to protect their skin and of course for beauty purpose πŸ˜„ in Burmese, Thanakha means 'clean' and they also believe that Thanakha can keep their faces from the sun's heat and make the skin feel brighter~ πŸ˜†

So, no wonder if you are traveling in Myanmar, you will often see women (and men) using Thanakha on their cheeks 😍 Because of Thanakha's culture ~  I became curious and wanted to see, what if Burmese women got dressed, what kind of style will they use and look like (?) Well, even though I actually saw it when I was at the airport and at the hotel reception, but I wanted to see how they wearing make up in their daily basis not when they are at work πŸ˜†

Then I decided to visit shopping mall HAHAHA yes SHOPPING MALL! Because one of my friends said, "If you want to see the REAL fashion style of people in any part of the world, it would be easy if you visit shopping mall." My friend believes that anyone who visit shopping mall will doll up, "You should know, for women, shopping mall is the best place to show off their fashion." Is it correct? πŸ˜‚

So, I chose Junction City Mall, located in central Yangon, Myanmar. Junction City Mall was built in one building with Pan Pacific hotel and I guess this mall is one of the best malls in Myanmar. Since Myanmar is undergoing massive construction so that's why many new high buildings just built up πŸ˜† then, what was my first impression when I entered Junction City Mall? Well, I was amazed 😍 the atmosphere was so contrast even within a distance of 500 meters from the mall, where I saw many locals still wear sarongs and Thanakha πŸ˜„

Whereas when in the shopping mall, I saw many young people and elderly with a great fashion sense 😍 there are some who still wear sarongs of course, but the majority of young people in the mall all wear jeans and dress ~ even in the mall there are many shops selling famous fashion and skincare products that are full of local people. It was totally different with what my friends think about Myanmar.

Anyway, speaking of local people.. are they 100% homogeneous or heterogeneous (like Indonesian and American)? Umm, as far as I know, when I saw local people, even though they are not 100% homogeneous but the majority are look like South Asians (Indian, Bangladesh) or as my friend said, "They look like Padangnese.

But that does not mean there is no difference at all because it turns out there are also local people who look like Chinese. After read some journals, I found out that many years ago, when China lacked of women, they decided to marry women from other Asian countries such as Myanmar and Vietnam because in Myanmar the number of women is more than men πŸ˜„ so these mixed childrens was born and finally growing up brings a beautiful difference to Myanmar 😍

And next about the food, food in Myanmar is somewhat similar to food in India as well as in Malaysia, there are even some food that taste like Indonesian food. For example, rice, they often eat biryani rice and one of their vegetables stir-fried taste like Indonesian capcay 😍 so, I had no problem at all, because it was delicious HAHA.

I also wanna give important note, because not all restaurants in Myanmar can accept card payments even at KFC, I still need to pay used cash πŸ˜† and some hotels also cannot accept the card, so make sure when you book a hotel, they can accept payment by card ~ and when ordering food, make sure you also bring some cash πŸ˜‚ and just for your information, Myanmar itself around 7 years ago did not have any ATM, so everything purchased must be paid in cash.

And you should know that in Yangon, the motorbike is banned! The reason was because every month there were frequent accidents due to careless drivers. So, don't be surprised if you could not see any motorbikes on the streets of Yangon, Myanmar. Even if there are similar motorbikes, it is actually e-bikes and still not many drivers use it. Honestly this makes roads in Myanmar look more clean ~

Another fun fact, walaupun letak setir mobil di Myanmar berada di sebelah kanan (sama seperti Indonesia, Thailand, etc), tapi jalur kendaraannya juga berada di kanan (seperti Korea, etc) - bingung? πŸ˜‚ Dan perbedaan waktu mereka adalah GMT +6.30 (as you know sangat sedikit negara yang memiliki perbedaan waktu 0.30), jadi kalau di Bali jam 11 maka di Myanmar masih jam 9.30 (beda -1.30 menitan) πŸ˜†

For the last, pertanyaan paling mendasar yang gue dapat dari teman-teman gue, 'apakah worth it untuk liburan ke Myanmar?' well, gue rasa worth it.

Who knows, kan? πŸ˜„πŸ‘
Another fun fact, even though the location of the steering wheel in Myanmar is on the right (same as Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, etc), but the vehicle lane is also right (same as Korea, etc) πŸ˜‚ confused, eh? And the difference in their time is GMT +6.30 (as you know, very few countries have time difference 0.30), so if in Bali now 11pm then in Myanmar still 9.30pm (difference around -1.30 minutes) πŸ˜†

Meanwhile, the most basic question that I got was 'is it worth to go to Myanmar for holiday?' well, I think it's worth. Moreover, the price is not very expensive πŸ˜‚ for me, Myanmar can be used as an example of a country that even though it has only begun to develop for 7 years, but their progress really significant πŸ‘ They can make rules without motorbikes and improve their public transportation little by little, and it makes the roads in Myanmar are also clean! Even the airport is good and big, maybe 20 years from now, Myanmar can be a rapidly developing country. Who knows, right? πŸ˜„πŸ‘

  1. Waktu suami tugas ke Yangon aku dioleh2-in Longyi, tapi kok menurutku bagusan sarung Indonesia ya hahahaha. Kayak merk Atlas gitu kainnya enak. Atau batik Indonesia.
